7 Minute Workout Challenge
I’m horribly out of shape. There, I admitted it.
This winter has been rough. I always want to just hibernate but on top of that I have had bad lower back pain since October. I had back pain before that but shovelling tonnes of snow this winter certainly didn’t help. The winter and the pain combined to really demotivate me.
But that is just a cop out. I know that most of the solution to my back pain is simply increasing my core strength. I have always had really great lower body strength and endurance. I can not do anything for weeks and then go for a nice hard ski or bike ride and not really feel it. But my core has always been weak. Right now I couldn’t do ten sit-ups to save my life. And I’d like to not be in pain when the canoeing season kicks in.
This morning, with the warmer temperatures and mostly ice-free sidewalks I decided to go for a brisk walk. But I needed something more than a walk. Then I remembered downloading the 7 Minute Workout Challenge app (https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/7-minute-workout-challenge/id680170305?mt=8) a while back. I hate workouts (mostly because they bore me), but I figured I could handle seven minutes at high intensity.
It felt really good. My heart was pumping, and I was using core muscles I just never use (except for things like, oh I don’t know, standing, sitting, putting on my socks, sex, etc.) The rests are short enough that you don’t have a chance to think, and the intervals are almost over before you realize how much pain you will be in later.
After the 7 Minutes I also went for that brisk walk around the neighbourhood (average speed: 5.7 km/h).
I’m not going to be posting pictures of my six-pack progress or anything like that. I don’t have any goals other than feeling better and not being in pain.
