Redtail Paddle Refurbished

I’ve been using this paddle quite extensively lake tripping for the past three summers. I am a big fan of Redtail’s “otter tail” shape. This paddle, made of cherry and ash, was in need of some work. I sanded off the old finish, touched up the epoxy tip, and re-finished the whole paddle with three coats of spar varnish. Since I had to remove the original Redtail logo sticker, I needed to put some identifying mark back on the blade. I used a wood burner to to draw the five lines (before applying the varnish). I am very happy with the results even though I probably won’t be on the water as much this summer.

Vintage Chuck Barfoot Skateboard Deck

My sister was cleaning out a closet at our parent’s house and she found this old skate deck. It was my brother’s deck. I am not sure of the exact year he got it. I am guessing around 1984, but it could be a bit earlier. (Chuck Barfoot started producing the first concave decks in 1980). I do remember hanging out at The Snoboard Shop in Calgary with my brother while the young guy at the shop meticulously hand-cut the Barfoot bear-paw logo into the grip tape while setting up the board.

I picked up a set of trucks and wheels today and will get this beautiful piece of skate history back to working condition. I’ll post some more photos after I get the deck all cleaned up.

Sadly, my first snowboard, a Barfoot Twintip, got put in the trash at some point. I would have loved to have kept that board.

So glad to see Chuck making skateboards and snowboards again. I might have order a new deck from him to compliment the vintage one.

Easter Eggs (maybe Dinosaur Eggs)

We are getting together with family tomorrow for easter. My 2 1/2 year-old nephew is crazy about dinosaurs. Have you ever heard a 2 year-old say dip-lo-do-kus with such authority that you feel like you have nothing left to teach him? Well, that’s how he is.

We are going to have an easter egg hunt. I dyed some eggs today. They are supposed to be dinosaur eggs. One looks like a Rastafarisoraus egg for sure. But my favourite are the crazy two-tone spirals. Diplodocus, maybe?
